Most of us don’t really think a lot about magnesium, or really know what it does for the human body. Most of us also don’t realize that we could be magnesium deficient! Magnesium is an essential mineral that is found in the ocean, rocks and plants. It also plays a major role in your health.

Magnesium functions on a cellular level in our bodies. It assists with the transmission of nerve impulses and the production of energy. It is essential in the formation and production of your DNA and other key energy sources like ATP. ATP is Adenosine Triphosphate—it’s the substance that carries energy from cell to cell, essential for metabolism and muscle function. Kind of important! Magnesium also aids in detoxification and strengthens the immune system.

A lack of magnesium can cause cramped muscles, overall anxiety, a weakened immune system, and difficulty getting to or staying asleep. Without magnesium, muscles do not contract and relax properly and cramping can occur. Because Magnesium enables the body to produce more insulin, your muscles will contract and relax more efficiently, contributing to better bone integrity and, of course,  stronger muscles.

Tennis star Maria Sharapova is one example of a well-known athlete who is magnesium deficient, and takes supplements for better performance and recovery. Recovery is a big factor for athletes–magnesium alkalizes the body and helps reduce lactic acid, which is partly responsible for post-exercise pain.

To up your magnesium intake, you can ingest it, or absorb it topically. Studies have shown , the best way to get magnesium absorbed is through the largest organ in the body ,which is your skin. That is why topical application is optimal for most people. Skin absorption ability is the reason why magnesium creams are great for sore muscles after your workout. Whether you choose the route of Epsom salt and essential oils baths, or custom made magnesium and essential oils lotions, these are two great options for getting more magnesium.
